Abstract
Vocabulary learning plays an important role in English learning. This essay emphasizes on discussion whether EFL learners can learn vocabulary effectively. At first, I illustrated four assumptions about vocabulary learning in reading in English--- the noticing assumption, the guessing ability assumption, the “guessing-retention link” assumption, the “cumulative gain” assumption. Then, I studied the four assumption and found that in fact the effect of vocabulary learning strategies in reading in English is not so distinct as the assumption. Furtherly, I quoted Batia Laufer’s experiment to demonstrate my concept. Finally, I concluded that reading for vocabulary learning is to some degree fragile and should combine vocabulary learning strategies in reading in English with word focused activities.
