摘 要
《了不起的盖茨比》是美国著名的“迷惘的一代”小说家菲茨杰拉德的代表作。这篇小说通过主人公盖茨比浪漫、悲壮、富有戏剧色彩的一生，反映了在浮华享乐、迷惘失落的爵士时代，年轻人对“美国梦”的狂热追求及其遭遇破灭的过程。这部小说不是唯一一部描写二十年代的美国的作品，但毫无疑问的，它在世界文学史是一部伟大的著作。在文中作者大量运用象征艺术手法来表现其深邃的思想与主题。作者还通过对颜色的灵活运用来象征无形的概念。地理环境，气候和灰谷以及艾克尔堡医生的眼睛一起传达了这些象征的意义。

ABSTRACT
The Great Gatsby is the representative work of F. Scott Fitzgerald, one of the most famous American novelists of “the lost generation”. Through the revelation of Gatsby’s heroic and tragic life, Fitzgerald successfully gives a vivid des cription of the young people’s pursuit of American dream and its disillusionment in the Jazz Age. The novel is not only unique among the American works of the 20th century, but also an undoubted masterpiece of the world literature. In the famous works, Fitzgerald artistically adopts the technique of symbolism to represent his abstract ideas and concepts. Many colors are cleverly employed to symbolize different intangible ideas. The geographical backgrounds, the climate, the dash valley and the eyes of Dr. T. J. Ecktelrurg also convey their symbolic meanings.
The thesis consists of several parts as follows: symbolism of colors, symbolism
of persons, symbolism of objects, symbolism and setting in The Great Gatsby.
