ABSTRACT
In both English and Chinese, there are a great number of color words expressing the colors in the world. The basic color terms in English and Chinese are what we mainly study in this thesis. As English and Chinese are two different languages, the basic color terms in English and Chinese have their own word-formation characteristics respectively. So we have done some classification and elucidation on the word-formation characteristics of English and Chinese basic color terms and found that the word-formation characteristics of English basic color terms are mainly represented in simple word, derivative word, compound word and phrase while those of Chinese basic color terms are in pictographic Chinese character, figurative formation and flexibility in part of speech. Basic color terms reflect cultural diversities in the aspects such as social psychology, customary habits as well as value orientations. In this thesis we make contrast and analysis on the most frequently used six pairs of English and Chinese basic color terms---black, white, red, yellow, green and blue. There are similarities as well as differences in their cultural connotations. Because of the cultural connotations of basic color terms, in the view of sense, colors also influence our psychological feelings and behaviors. So we have done some brief discussion on the nonverbal uses of colors in the aspects of daily life, business and international affairs. Language is the carrier and reflection of culture. The study of basic color terms is significant in cross-cultural communication, English language teaching and learning, and translation. Meanwhile, there are still much room left to scholars for further study and research.
