Abstract: George Eliot is a famous novelist in 19th century, United Kingdom. Her novels, have many characters (there are individuals representing certain types, each character has his or her own personalities), plot twists and turns. In George Eliot’s representative work, “Middlemarch”,the author molded about 150 characters, because of Eliot's successful mold, reader reads as if being able to see them, hear them, experience their life state, and feel their peculiar lingering charming from the art world at the same time. The research to novelist's characterization strategy is conducive to understanding the personage character, social surrounding and novel theme, further experience the artistic charm of this novel.The main body of this paper discusses George Eliot’s representative work “Middlemarch”. Its characterization strategy, (including dramatize strategy, “episode” strategy, des cription strategy and discourse strategy), expecting to reveal the art charm of this brilliant work.
