Abstract
Vocabulary is the material to put a language into the practice. Without grammar we can convey a little, but without vocabulary we can convey nothing. Vocabulary teaching is an indispensable part of English curriculum in junior high school, but some traditional vocabulary-teaching methods seem to isolate the words from the context or break away from the scientific strategies. All the traditional vocabulary-teaching methods can’t help students to develop a language competence in the long run but cause them to lose interest in English. Middle school English teachers should pay great attention to this, since they are the premier ones who introduce students to the field of English.
This paper will sum up some vocabulary learning strategies and analyse the disadvantages of the traditional methods at the same time provide some scientific vocabulary-learning strategies through experimentation and hope that the new scientific strategies would be valuable for junior high school English teachers and students during their teaching and learning process.
